At Benchmark Archaeology we employ a wide range of survey strategies to meet the needs of individual projects. We can carry out walkover and photographic surveys to establish current land-use, crop, and access issues, and also preliminary field boundary/hedgerow surveys ahead of any in-depth environmental assessment.

Rapid sampling strategies employed by us include field-walking and systematic metal detector surveys to recover any surviving concentrations of surface artefacts and establish any need for further investigation via geo-physical survey or trial trenching. We also perform Topographical surveys that can identify the remains of buried remains of dwellings, banks and ditches. Geo-physical surveys can also be organised by Benchmark Archaeology.

All projects are carried out in accordance with PPG 16 (DOE, 1990) and the guidelines and recommendations issued by The Institute of Field Archaeologists and English Heritage.
